St George Pilots Memorial

This fighter pilot memorial pays tribute to two brave men hailing from St George. One of these men, Squadron Leader John Jackson bravely served in World War II in some of its most dangerous battles and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) medal for his work in the Middle East after destroying seven aircraft. less than six months later, Jackson led his squadron of Kittyhawks in the Battle of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea which prevented the Japanese advancement into the country. In recognition of his efforts, Jacksons International Airport at Port Moresby is named in his honour. The other serviceman, Warrant Officer Leonard Waters, was the first Aboriginal fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. The legacy of these two locals will forever be remembered on the sandstone monument overlooking the Balonne River....

Mount Etna Caves National Park contains some of Australia's most cavernous limestone formations. Protected from fire by the limestone karst, dry rainforest thrives amongst sharp pinnacles and shady crevices. The national park is especially important to a number of bat species. Eighty per cent of Australia's breeding population of female bent-wing bats use a single cave in the national park for birthing and rearing their young. During this time ranger guided tours are offered to see the spectacular nightly emergence of over 100,000 bats. Tours operate during the bat breeding season, from December to February (fees apply). Tombs Circuit, The

The Tombs Circuit track is located within the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park. This is a remote park of wild and diverse landscapes. At more than 1000 metres above sea level, the Consuelo Tableland is the highest plateau in Queensland. The Tombs Circuit track is a 5.8 kilometre circuit track leaving from the Visitor Orientation Area. It can also be walked as a 4.2 kilometre return track. More than 400 stencilled motifs (images) decorate the walls of a sandstone shelter below the bluff of sandstone known as The Tombs. The Tombs once contained burial chambers for local Aboriginal people. Skeletons were wrapped and bound in bark burial cylinders. Allow three hours to complete this walk of a difficult grade. When visiting rock art at The Tombs, please remember that the art is very fragile and can be permanently damaged by touching-even accidentally. Dust kicked up by visitors can also damage the art, as fine dust particles stick to the rock surface, covering the stencils. Please enjoy a close look at the rock art while remaining on the boardwalks, which have been built to prevent damage to the rock art....
